These painting holidays are planned for people who want to work in a
wonderfully heterogeneous environment. Each paints as he or she feels
comfortable. No knowledge of painting is necessary. Simply to surrender to the
colors in such a landscape is fully sufficient. Naturally trained artists are
also welcome. Each can learn from on another.
Umm El Dabadib lies approximately 25 miles (40 km) outside of the Kharga
Oasis, in the middle of the desert. It is a very special place: in Neolithic
Times it contained a sea and between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago waterfalls
bubbled from springs in the mountains to the east.
The ingenious water system of the Persians later brought
the needed water to the plain. The Romans built a fort and constructed the
aqueducts which are still celebrated. Umm El Dabadib has been settled many
times. There the first persecuted Copts sought refuge. Near the ruins of the
fort you can yet see the remains of a church. The Eremites passed years of
loneliness here in caves. There are also graves in which you can discover mummy
remains.
You can paint, read, write, or simply enjoy yourself in
the shadows of huge 2000+ year old acacia trees. The surroundings, with their
golden-sand crescent dunes, the mountains over which the wind blows sand from
the long Abu Muharrik dune chains toward the west will enchant you.
Here you will overnight in a sleeping bag in tents or
under the glorious heaven of stars. You will enjoy all meals with constantly
changing fare. During the day you can paint, walk, hike or simply linger. In the
evenings let us sit around the campfire and enjoy the comradeship with singing,
dancing, listening to stories
.
After 7 days you will wend slowly back to civilization. The return trip travels through the oases and the White Desert to
Cairo and Bahariya in the 4x4 Land Cruisers.
